MMC visits Rhodes Park

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) blames ground water for the overgrown vegetation in Rhodes Park.

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) blames ground water for the overgrown vegetation in Rhodes Park.

This follows complaints from residents that the grounds surrounding the bowling club were not maintained.

In its March 10 edition, the EXPRESS published an article in which Ms Belinda Brooks expressed concerns about overgrown grass.

The CoJ’s Community Development MMC, Clr Chris Vondo, said staff from the community development department maintains the area regularly.

“The area is water logged and growth is rapid in this part of the park. However, it has been cleared and it will stay that way. A small team is in the park daily collecting litter. Every 14 days we have the grass cut,” he said.

Clr Vondo added that the open trenches on the side of the lake were dug to deal with the underground water problems in the area.

“Trenching was done to try combat the underground water seepage. This was done to try direct the water seepage down into the lake. If this was not done, the entire area would become swampy. This is work in progress and will be completed as soon as possible,” he said.
