Another child killed on Laurie Road

The latest fatal crash occurred merely 300 metres from where a memorial was erected in memory of Skye.

Laurie Road has claimed another young life.

A 15-year-old child was killed on Laurie Road on Friday evening.

This is the second such incident on Laurie Road.

On August 21, 2013, 17-year-old Skye Wilsnagh was killed when she tried to cross the road.

The latest fatal crash occurred merely 300 metres from where a memorial was erected in memory of Skye.

Following the announcement of the latest crash, a petition has been released which calls for the municipality to make good on its promise to install a traffic circle to curb speeding on the road.

The petition calls for the installation of the circle to recommence without further delays and that the necessary measures such as barriers and signage be put in place to make the area safer until completion.

In addition, the petition calls for a traffic light be installed on Aileen Road as a matter of urgency.

The ward 18 councillor for Edenvale, Clr Heather Hart, said the municipality promised to install the traffic light at the intersection of Aileen and Laurie roads when the road was opened to Greenstone.

“We are also calling for a suitably placed pedestrian crossing and a traffic light or circle to be installed at the Hubert Mathew and Laurie Road intersection. There should be a daily EMPD presence to control the behaviour of taxis, particularly speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, rat-running through Illiondale and using the service road as a short cut,” said Clr Hart.
