The Tiles4Change entry by editor, Marietta Lombard and online editor and senior journalist Charmaine Slater, was acknowledged as a recipient of the Highly Commended Award.

The Bedforview and Edenvale News, together with its sister publication Joburg East Express, received accolades at Thursday’s Caxton Excellence Awards.

The Joburg East Express and Hirsch’s Spelling Bee Competition entry by Bedfordview and Edenvale News and Joburg East Express Editor, Marietta Lombard; branch manager, Chris Mcinga and project leader, Daniel Seleme, was the winner of the Best Original Idea category.

The Highly Commended Award in the same category was awarded to the EXPRESS’ sister publication, Bedfordview and Edenvale News.

The Tiles4Change entry by editor, Marietta Lombard and online editor and senior journalist Charmaine Slater, was acknowledged as a recipient of the Highly Commended Award.

Tiles4Change was also a finalist in the 2014 South African Campaign of the Year Award in the Campaign of the Year category. This community initiative aims to give school children a support structure in dealing with day-to-day issues such as substance abuse, domestic violence and bullying.

Joburg East Express and Hirsch’s Spelling Bee Competition, spearheaded by Mr Mcinga, was one of the first events to be held under the auspices of Caxton to promote literacy. The event aimed to expand children’s horizons beyond the classroom and enhance their process of learning and it proved to be the judges’ choice for the winning entry at the 2015 Caxton Excellence Awards Best Original Idea.

Multimedia Storyteller of the Year

The online editor for the NEWS and EXPRESS, Charmaine Slater, also received the Highly Commended Award in the Multimedia Storyteller of the Year category.

This category acknowledges a journalist’s skill in telling a story on all available platforms, including online and in print.

Charmaine’s entry, Outrage over Rape Hot Spot, told the story of an Edenvale mother’s please for the safety of all women after her daughter was allegedly raped.

This was followed by an outcry from the community who shared the mother’s sentiments.

The winner of this category was Alberton Record.
