Pensioners targeted by con-woman

A female con artist has targeted elderly residents in Kensington.

Ms Mickey van Wyk (88), a resident at the De Wetshof Retirement Village, said the woman arrived on her doorstep on Sunday.

“She told me her car had broken down and she needed to make a phone call. She also said her two children were waiting for her in the vehicle,” said Ms Van Wyk.

“I allowed her to make a phone call from my landline, but felt uncomfortable as she was constantly looking at my cellular phone. When she had finished on the phone, she asked me for R40 for petrol so that she could drive to Queen Street.

“I told her to look around, she was in a retirement home and no one would be able to help her with money. We have very little as it is,” said Ms Van Wyk.

She then asked Ms Van Wyk if she could use her bathroom and the pensioner agreed.

“When she was done, she asked if I could take her to Queen Street and I said no. It was only after she had left that I discovered she had taken several items from my bathroom,” said Ms Van Wyk.

She described the woman as a 40 year old who wore a large windbreaker and stretch pants.

Ms Van Wyk has warned other pensioners to be careful of con artists.
