NEWS and EXPRESS shine at Caxton Excellence Awards

The Joburg East Express and Hirsch's Spelling Bee Competition entry by editor, Marietta Lombard; branch manager, Chris Mcinga and project leader, Daniel Seleme, was the winner of the Best Original Idea category.

Joburg East Express, sister paper to the Bedfordview and Edenvale News claimed victory at Thursday night’s Caxton Excellence Awards.

The Joburg East Express and Hirsch’s Spelling Bee Competition entry by editor, Marietta Lombard; branch manager, Chris Mcinga and project leader, Daniel Seleme, was the winner of the Best Original Idea category.

This initiative saw the spelling masters of nine local primary schools competing for the honours at the first ever Joburg East Express and Hirsch’s Spelling Bee Competition in September 2014.

The participating schools were Sir Edmund Hillary Primary, Lyndhurst Primary, Hillcrest Primary, Eastgate Primary, Kensington Ridge Primary, Observatory Primary, Jeppe High Preparatory, Cyrildene Primary and Troyeville Primary schools.

The competition was spearheaded by Mr Mcinga, and was one of the first events to be held under the auspices of Caxton to promote literacy. The event aimed to expand children’s horizons beyond the classroom and enhance their process of learning. It proved to be the judges’ choice for the winning entry at the 2015 Caxton Excellence Awards Best Original Idea.

A Highly Commended Award in the same category was awarded to the Bedfordview and Edenvale News.

Online editor and senior journalist, Charmaine Slater and editor, Marietta Lombard’s entry for Tiles4Change, was acknowledged at the runner-up in this category.

Tiles4Change was also a finalist in the 2014 South African of the Year Award in the Campaign of the Year category.

This community initiative aims to give school children a support structure in dealing with day-to-day issues such as substance abuse, domestic violence and bullying.

Charmaine, the online editor for both the NEWS and EXPRESS, also received the Highly Commended Award in the Multimedia Storyteller of the Year category.

This category acknowledges a journalist’s skill in telling a story on all available platforms of online and in print.

This category was won by Alberton Record for coverage of the N12 Horror Crash.
