Men arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms

Two unlicensed firearms were discovered during a routine stop-and-search in Jeppestown.

Officers were patrolling the area in the afternoon when they spotted a silver/grey Toyota Hilux at the corner of Commissioner and Browning streets.

According to Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, there were three men inside the bakkie and the officers decided to stop and search the vehicle.Upon searching the occupants, the officers found two firearms with the serial numbers filed off.

The officers also found a police appointment certificate.

W/O Munyai said the men could not explain who the appointment certificate belonged to.

The suspects were all arrested and taken to the Jeppe SAPS and detained.

W/O Munyai said it was later discovered that the police appointment certificate belongs to a former reservist Constable, who used to work at the Johannesburg Central and Vosloorus SAPS.

The constable resigned from the reservists a few years ago and is one of the arrested suspects.

All the suspects, aged 31, 34 and 63, will appear in court soon.
