Residents encouraged to report man begging with a child

In April 2014, the NEWS published an article in which the Edenvale Child Welfare SA - Edenvale branch revealed it had launched an investigation to trace the man.

A man seen begging with a child in the Bedfordview and Edenvale areas has once again caught the attention of residents who have vowed to contact authorities the next time they see him.

The man, who was recently spotted in the Bedford Gardens and Oriel areas, walks the streets with a child in his arms.

According to residents, the child seems to be immobile.

“I hope, for the child’s sake, that he is not drugged and put to sleep so this man can use him as a pawn to get money,” said one resident.

On February 22, residents and motorists driving along Kirkby Road spotted the man whom they said was begging for money to buy asthma medication for the child.

In April 2014, the NEWS published an article in which the Edenvale Child Welfare SA – Edenvale branch revealed it had launched an investigation to trace the man.

At the time, chairperson Mrs Heather Hart, said the news of the man was distressing, especially because the child seemed immobile.

“If you see this man around Bedfordview or Edenvale, please call Edenvale Child Welfare. The number to call is 011 452-5940/1 or Gerald at Child Welfare on 071 308 7008. Please save these numbers to your phone, as this man disappears as soon as he realises he is being watched,” said one resident.

Motorists have also reported seeing the man along Arbroath Road in Bedfordview and on First Avenue in Edenvale.

One motorist, Mrs Veronica Boshomane, said she noticed the man on Oxford Road and did not suspect foul play until she saw Facebook posts from other residents.

“He did not approach me, but I stopped and asked him if the child was okay and he said yes. I told him to keep him light-clothed as it was too hot for a child to be wearing tracksuits,” said Mrs Boshomane.

Should residents spot the man after hours, or during the weekend, they are encouraged to contact the sector vehicle for the specific areas.
