Additional security for cemeteries

Cemeteries which have been hard hit by crime and vandals will have security personnel on standby.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), announced the appointment of security guards last week for a number of cemeteries, including Edenvale.

The appointment of guards will assist in the prevention of crimes such as tombstone vandalism and theft.

Cemeteries such as Edenvale, Thokoza-Schoeman, Phumlani, Ililiba, Lala Ngoxolo, Vlakfontein and Petersfield were the hardest hit by crime.

This deployment of guards has already yielded positive results and led to several arrests in Tembisa at the Mooifontein and Ililiba cemeteries.

“The municipality also understands that the crime phenomenon is opportunistic in nature, which requires us to keeping maintenance up to date in order for criminals not to take advantage of the long grass and overgrown weeds,” said the EMM’s spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe.
