Church celebrates National Police Day

The Catholic Church in Yeoville celebrated National Police Day on Sunday, January 25.

Mr Joseph Dube, from Yeoville Catholic Justice and Peace, said they invited Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers to address both the Sunday school children and adults during the 9am service held to celebrate National Police Day.

The JMPD contingent was led by Sergeant Maswanganye and encouraged the congregation to work together with the JMPD in addressing issues like illegal parking.

“We should encourage the public to park their cars in the area designated for parking,” said Sgt Maswanganye.

The officers also spoke about illegal trading, which is one of the challenges in Yeoville.

The JMPD officers explained why trading next to the market was not allowed and pleaded with the congregation to raise awareness and encourage traders to apply for a space in the market.

The issue of noise from liquor outlets was also addressed.

While visiting the children at the Sunday school, the officers spoke about road safety.

At the end of the service, Father Johannes Silalahi prayed for all the police officers in South Africa and blessed the JMPD officers who were present.

After the service, the congregation had the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarity on the issues the officers had raised during the service.

Mr Dube said the church plans to organise a public meeting to deal with illegal trading in the hope of finding a long-lasting solution.
