Couple celebrates 63rd anniversary

They were married in London in 1952.

Shirley and Bernie Schweitzer celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on January 13.

The pair reside at Rand Aid Association’s Tarentaal retirement village.

They were married in London in 1952. The Schweitzers have two daughters, both of whom live in Australia, and four grandchildren, two of whom are married.

They said they are still waiting patiently to become great-grandparents.

The couple said their union has been grounded in respect, appreciating each other’s differences and giving each other their own space.

“And, of course, having a sense of humour and being able to laugh with each other and at each other,” they added.

Shirley and Bernie moved to South Africa as newly-weds.

“During our early days, apart from both having full-time jobs, I was a semi-professional pianist and Shirley was my vocalist for many years,” said Bernie.

“We are still fortunate enough to be reasonably active and both able to drive. I am now 85 and Shirley is 81.”
