Residents raise concerns over billboard applications

Bedfordview residents have expressed concern over the recent application to place billboards on Nicol and Bradford roads.

According to the Ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, the proposed billboard for Nicol Road will be 11 metres by 3 metres in size.

She said her concern was that the billboard would take away the ‘small town feel’ and environmental quality in the area.

Men and women took to Facebook to express their views about the matter.

One resident wrote, “Billboards are an eyesore and a distraction. We are constantly bombarded with consumerism but guess that’s the price we pay for living in urban areas.” (Sic)

Another user shared the same sentiments and posted, “I’m not in favour at all. Residential areas are not for billboards, there are other means to encourage the economy.”

A post from another user read, “We don’t need another eyesore, look at the terrible road and rather fix it.”

One user posted that he did not see a problem with a billboard being put up in the area.

Although it was unclear at the time of going to press when the boards would be put up, Clr Humphreys told the NEWS that she requested that the adverts should not be of an offensive nature.

“I asked that there be no derogatory advertisements on those boards. Nothing sexist, racist or anything that insults people’s beliefs,” she added.
