Birthday celebrated with a knit-a-thon

The EXPRESS was recently invited to a 67 blankets initiative, hosted by Mr Puneet Dhamija.

Mr Dhamija said he was inspired by an article published in the EXPRESS on December 23.

After reading the article, he thought it would be great to host a knit-a-thon to celebrate his birthday.

Mr Dhamija said he felt it was his duty as a citizen to become a part of the initiative.

The knit-a-thon was held at his home as part of his birthday celebrations.

Mr Dhamija is not only the chair-elect for the I Love Kensington Association (ILKA), he is also a director of the L. Ron Hubbard Heritage Site and the PRO for the Cleveland Community Policing Forum (CCPF).

Mr Dhamija said he met the founder of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day project, Mrs Carolyn Steyn, at an event three months ago.

“I saw her knitting and she was surrounded by other people who were also knitting. Mrs Steyn told me about the initiative and how they need more knitters. I told her I knew nothing about knitting and she directed me to the group’s Facebook page. My first knit-a-thon took place in Cyrildene’s China Town and that is where I first learnt how to knit. That is how I started with this initiative. Ever since, I try and attend every knit-a-thon”, he added.

Mr Dhamija urged other people to get involved in charity work as it is always good to help others.

He said their target is to have about 9 000 blankets knitted by April
