Over 900 gifts collected by Rotarians

More than 900 needy babies, children, mothers and elderly received gifts this past Christmas thanks to the community and the Edenvale Rotary Club’s Tree of Joy Project.

Through the project, Rotarians collected gifts for the needy at Greenstone Shopping Centre.

“We were once again astounded by the generosity of the shoppers at Greenstone Shopping Centre this December,” said Rotarian Lesley Crowe, the project leader for the Tree of Joy.

“We set a goal of 900 gifts for our Tree of Joy project this year, wondering whether we would make it, considering the weak economic climate. Despite our reservations, the shoppers did us proud, and I am sure there were many happy faces at charity organisations around Edenvale this Christmas,” she said.

The Edenvale Rotary Club started the Tree of Joy project in 2013.

Due to its success, the club decided to run it again in 2014.

Rotary clubs in nearby areas assisted with the project.

Each club obtained lists of wishes from individuals and charity organisations.

The wishes were then placed on wish cards and hung on a tree at the Greenstone Shopping Centre.

Shoppers selected wish cards and bought the gifts written on them. The gifts were wrapped and distributed to the charities on Christmas eve.

The Edenvale Rotary Club also ran two of the gift wrapping kiosks.

The money raised will be used for projects at charities in the Edenvale area.
