Constable Tebogo Mashele from the Sebenza SAPS died in a car crash on Great North Road in Benoni, while his colleague has been hospitalised and is in a critical condition.
It is believed the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash was driving under the influence of alcohol.
The crash occurred on Saturday, January 17.
Constable Mashele has served with the Sebenza SAPS for almost five years.
The survivor from the accident is Constable Xolani Mlambo.
The Sebenza SAPS communications officer, Constable Sharon Mahamba-Tsotsotso, said the officers were on duty when the crash occurred.
She said the cause of the accident has not yet been established.
According to Const Mahamba, the station is saddened by the untimely death of Const Mashele, who served the SAPS with integrity.
“He was a dedicated and hard working officer. He was a well-respected person and Sebenza has lost a hero,” said Const Mahamba.
