Kids have fun with Dora the Explorer

Eastgate Shopping Centre was abuzz with many activities this festive season, but hardly any surpassed the Nickelodeon shows the centre hosted for children visiting the centre.

On December 17, 50 children from the Othandweni Care Centre in Soweto were invited to watch the channel’s Dora the Explorer, Diego and Boots and SpongeBob SquarePants shows.

The event was a success, with many of the children enjoying taking photos with the characters.

The centre is supported by Johannesburg Child Welfare and houses 90 children who come from different backgrounds, 30 of whom are babies and 60 aged between six and 19.

One of the of the children, who cannot be named in light of the Child Protection Act, said said she was excited to experience the show as well as to be in a shopping centre with different kinds of people.

“I never would have imagined that one day I would see myself in the midst of the characters I only see on television,” she said.

The event drew children and families from Bedfordview and the surrounding areas, including Malvern, Kensington, Alexandra and Tembisa.

The children were served lunch by Sausage Saloon.

According to Ms Krystal Coconas, the centre’s communications manager, all proceeds raised at the event will go to the centre.

In between the shows, children were treated to photo shoots, puzzles and soft toys for smaller children.

Hampers were also given to the children before they left for Soweto.
