Clr Spadino plans to deliver

Ward councillor, Clr Mike Spadino, plans to continue delivering to all the residents in his ward and to improved service delivery from City of Johannesburg (CoJ) entities.

“One of my desires is to have a community centre in Malvern, so that all residents can have a venue for them to learn skills. Children would also have a place to play and be safe from being exposed to drugs and alcohol in the street,” said Clr Spadino.

He also promised to work with officials to have educational programmes in the ward. The educational programme would encourage residents to take pride in their suburb.

“Such programmes would include things like illegal dumping, how to apply for permission to open a business so that residents can comply with by laws, and to improve the area and quality of life,” he said. He also urged residents to report service deliveries issues when they happen, not a week later as is currently the case.

“One of the major issues is that many residents in the ward like to live in filth, with total disregard to other residents. Some residents dump trash illegally, other put dustbins out for collection days before the collection truck arrives and others dump dirty water or sewage into drains as the system cannot handle the overcrowding,” added Clr Spadino.

He said the major problems in his ward in 2014 were the breakdown in service delivery due to the gap when there was no ward councillor. Clr Spadino also had to come to grips with the dynamics of a diverse ward, which he believes he is getting right.

“Every day I am learning new things and how to better work with my people,” he said.

Another problem he raised is the crime in the ward, mainly due to drug dealing which is rife, illegal taverns in houses and gender violence. Clr Spadino said he will be working with the SAPS and Community Policing Forum (CPF) to try and combat the problems.

“The theft of electrical cables, damage to transformers, copper wire theft and stolen water meters are just some of the problems which had an impact on the lives of all residents. I urge residents to report these crimes as the people who commit these crimes are well known by community members,” he said.
