Fraudster caught in the act

After the store asked the suspect to give his name to verify his card details, they discovered that the card was not from the bank printed on it.

A 36-year-old man is in police custody after committing fraud at a shopping mall in Bedfordview.

According to Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, the suspect went into a store and bought goods worth R15 021.

“When his payment was due, he produced a Standard Charted Bank credit card. As soon as the attendant swiped the card, she received a call from an employee at Dinner’s Club letting her know that the card belonged to someone else,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

After the store asked the suspect to give his name to verify his card details, they discovered that the card was not from the bank printed on it.

The suspect appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court recently and bail was denied.

“He has also been positively linked to other crimes, including murder, using multiple names and identities,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

He added that police investigations are ongoing.
