Spare wheel thieves caught

"The car was also caught on CCTV footage on November 26," added Sgt Nhlabathi.

Vigilance led to the arrest of two men last Monday.

The suspects were spotted trying to break into a bakkie by a restaurant manager who reported the incident.

The spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said when the guard went to investigate he noticed a man underneath the bakkie allegedly trying to steal the spare wheel.

“When the suspect saw the guard, he ran to a white VW Polo Vivo parked behind the bakkie and drove off. Backup was called and they managed to stop the car at the boom gate,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

He added that police officers discovered that the car was on lookout alert and had been identified in crimes, including spare wheel theft using different registration number plates.

“The car was also caught on CCTV footage on November 26,” added Sgt Nhlabathi.

Two suspects, aged 30 and 26, were then arrested and detained at the Bedfordview SAPS.

They appeared in the Edenvale Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday for bail application, which was denied.

They remain in police custody and the date of their next court appearance was unavailable at the time of going to press.
