Beef up your security this festive season

As business is picking up and the festive is upon us, owners are urged to be extra cautious during this time.

The ADT managing director, Mr Clive Humphrey, said small retailers are mostly hit by shoplifting, burglary and internal theft.

“It is important that owners and employees discuss security concerns and ways to reduce the risks,” he said.

Mr Humphrey said gave the following tips to business owners and staff:

•  Ensure that two employees open and close the business in the morning and at night; criminals have been known to force staff inside to open the safe or tills.
•  Always activate the alarm system when the business is closed. Keep store rooms locked when not in use and install good quality security gates.
•  Leave till drawers open overnight and on weekends, and don’t keep high value items in the window on display, as this is a temptation for smash-and-grab. Installing safety glass is the most secure option.
•  Install convex mirrors that allow employees to easily observe all corners and aisles. If someone tries to commit a robbery, do not try to stop them. They are often desperate and dangerous people, and most carry weapons.
•  Use electronic tags that cannot be removed by a non-employee without damaging the merchandise.
•  To protect against employee theft, screen all employees before hiring them – it is the best defence against internal theft.
•  Install silent alarms and panic buttons to alert your security provider in the event of an emergency. Staff should not hesitate to press the panic button if they think something is untoward.

“Shoplifters often work in teams. One will distract staff while the others take items or open tills. If you have CCTV, set it to record 24 hours a day. Position the CCTV cameras towards the door or counter and high-value goods,” said Mr Humphrey.
