Safety tips from the SAPS

Sgt Nhlabathi said the police had arrested domestic workers in connection with house robberies, adding that it was important for home owners to keep ID copies of their employees.

With the festive season well upon us, it’s no secret that criminals like to take advantage of one of the busiest times of the year.

The Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, encouraged holiday makers to ensure that their post boxes are cleared and that their lights do not remain on even during the day.

He said, “If you can, we advise that you find someone to take care of your house while you are away and if possible, an automated switch for your lights can work in your favour as lights burning day in and day out, together with full post boxes, indicate to criminals that there is no one in the house.”

Sgt Nhlabathi said the police had arrested domestic workers in connection with house robberies, adding that it was important for home owners to keep ID copies of their employees.

He said, “Please make sure you know where your employees come from and where they stay when not at your house.”

As far as security companies are concerned, Sgt Nhlabathi said residents should make sure the person in charge of security in the house or complex is familiar with the security make up of the suburb and is active in working with the police to fight and eradicate crime in the area.

He added that it was important for people to always see where their cards are being swiped and to make sure the attendants do not leave their sight with their card.

“White collar crime is on the increase and there is a need for the police to remind people to be careful as to where they keep their details. Do not just give out your ID number and always make sure you have all your cards in your possession,” he said.

Sgt Nhlabathi assured residents that the police will not be kind to criminals this festive season.
