Man caught lying to SAPS

According to the acting spokesperson of the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, the man approached officers on Monday afternoon claiming he was held at gun point, kidnapped and robbed.

A man was arrested on Tuesday last week after it was found that his kidnapping and robbery story was nothing but a lie.

In addition, he was found in possession of dagga.

According to the acting spokesperson of the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, the man approached officers on Monday afternoon claiming he was held at gun point, kidnapped and robbed.

“The man told officers that thugs cornered him at the Stoneridge Shopping Centre. They pointed firearms at him and ordered him to get into his car. He was then driven to Soweto before he was robbed,” said Lt Col Roberts.

The man was questioned regarding the incident on Tuesday afternoon.

“When officers told the man they would accompany him to view video footage, the man confessed that he had lied and the incident never took place,” said Lt Col Roberts.

The man was arrested and appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

“Reporting false cases is a serious offence. Not only does it create unnecessary panic it also wastes police resources,” Lt Col Roberts said.

He added that following an increase of such cases, police stations are on high alert for possible false cases.
