Driver wounded, passenger killed in shootout

The Jeppe SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Richard Monyai, said the truck was travelling from Mozambique. It was headed towards City Deep when it was shot at.

The men linked to the killing of a passenger and critically wounding a truck driver on the M2 east have also been linked to the hijacking of a bakkie in Jeppe.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday, November 12.

The Jeppe SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Richard Monyai, said the truck was travelling from Mozambique. It was headed towards City Deep when it was shot at.

“An unconfirmed number of people shot at the truck, wounding the driver and killing the passenger. Both men were in their late 30’s and sustained wounds to their upper bodies. The driver was rushed to hospital in a serious condition,” he said.

He added that 15 spent R5 and AK47 cartridges were found at the scene.

W/O Monyai said an Opel Corsa bakkie was found abandoned near the shooting. It has been stolen the day before, from the corner of Commissioner and Gus streets.

“The owner of the Corsa bakkie parked the vehicle and entered a shop. When he came out, three men pointed firearms at him and demanded the car keys, money and a cellular phone. The men then pushed him inside the shop and drove off in his bakkie,” said W/O Monyai.

He appealed to anyone with information that can help the police to call the Jeppe SAPS on 011 624-600 or 011 624-6060. Alternatively, residents with information can phone Crime Line on 10111.
