Vagrants move into homestead

While officials continue to ignore the pleas of the community, vagrants have broken into the house and are sleeping inside.

The municipality continues to turn a blind eye to the degradation and destruction of the historic, Horwood’s Farm homestead.

While officials continue to ignore the pleas of the community, vagrants have broken into the house and are sleeping inside.

In addition, ward 18 councillor for Edenvale, Clr Heather Hart, has heard rumours that security guards employed by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) have turned a blind eye to what is going in inside the house.

It is also believed that the guards have taken money from vagrants to stay in both the homestead and in the section behind the tea room.

The EMM previously stated that security guards were appointed to protect the EMM’s property.

“They are simply not doing this,” Clr Hart said.

When the NEWS visited Horwood’s Farm last week, a team of plumbers were on-site to repair a blocked drain, reported in May.

“Hardly a week goes by when I do not get enquires about what is happening at the homestead or Horwood’s Farm,” Clr Hart said.

“Since taking office, I have been at the forefront of fighting to save this once beautiful facility and it is nothing short of a travesty that to date nothing meaningful has been done to stop the rot,” she added.

In July, the NEWS questioned the EMM’s spokesperson, Mr Temba Gadebe, on the latest developments regarding Horwood’s Farm

“We are still busy with the matter and doing everything possible to expedite the request for proposals,” Mr Gadebe said.

On November 4, the NEWS again questioned what the EMM was doing to protect the heritage site.

Comment on the matter was requested by November 7.

At the time of going to print, no comment was received.
