Rabbi offers reward for stolen items

It looks like the suspects gained entry through the roof.

The head of the South African Jewish Judicial Court has offered a reward for stolen prayer items, including phylactories, tepillins and a prayer shawl.

Rabbi Moshe Kurtstag said the items were stolen during a break-in at a synagogue in Urania Village in Observatory on Sunday, November 2.

“It looks like the suspects gained entry through the roof. They then opened the cabinet which is in front at the men’s prayer section. The suspects took the items in a packet. They possibly thought the items could be sold easily,” said Rabbi Kurtstag.

He said he has used the items for the past 17 years.

“I bought the items when I was 17 years old and in Israel. I bought the items after the ones I received from my father wore out. I have been using them for the past 60 years. They are holy items and have a sentimental value to me,” he said.

Rabbi Kurtstag said he will give R1 000 to anyone who can help return the items to him.

“Even if he or she wants to give them back anonymously, it is fine. An arrangement for the reward can be set up. I am more concerned about the items than the criminals,” he said.

The Yeoville SAPS communications officer, Constable Thabo Malatji, confirmed the incident.

“Nobody has been arrested and investigations are continuing,” he said.
