Vagrants live under Sebenza power lines

The men are also suspected of stealing iron filings from a business neighbouring the open field.

Members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) bylaw unit discovered approximately 10 men living under power lines in Sebenza.

According to information received, those living in the field are foreign nationals with asylum papers.

“This will have to be confirmed when officers return later. Those without papers will be sent back to their country of origin,” said EMPD bylaw unit member, Martin Koekemoer.

He added that the men are also suspected of stealing iron filings from a business neighbouring the open field.

According to one of the employees at the business, several men jump the wall daily to steal the filings.

“They are stealing our Christmas bonuses,” said the man, who cannot be named.

He added that iron filling are collected and sold for scrap metal.

The money received is kept aside and handed out as additional bonuses at year-end.
