The Bedfordview SAPS has issued a stern warning to motorists after a man was robbed at gunpoint recently.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the victim’s car broke down on the N3 South near the Van Buuren Road on-ramp.

“While he was still waiting for assistance, three men approached him and pointed a firearm at him. The suspects stole the victim’s watch, gold ring, navigation device, laptop and bank cards,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

He added that the value of the items was estimated to be in the region of R40 000.

Sgt Nhlabathi urged motorists to always be vigilant.

“Even on the freeway, please be on the lookout. Don’t show these perpetrators that you are stranded. Rather stay in the car and keep calm while waiting for help, as opening the bonnet and walking around the car will put your life in danger,” he said.

Asked where the hotspots for similar crimes were, Sgt Nhlabathi said, “Gillooly’s Interchange and the N3 North and South on Van Buuren are areas of concern for the police. However, motorists are encourage to drive with vigilance and exercise caution to avoid being victim to these crimes.”

He also assured members of the community that police officers are there for them.

“Know your sector managers and vehicle numbers, and keep them at hand,” added Sgt Nhlabathi.
