Sebenza SAPS recover stolen copper

Officers spotted four men along Lunick Road and gave chase. One suspect was arrested and the other three managed to escape.

The Sebenza SAPS confiscated high-priced electrical components stolen from an Edenvale Eskom substation on Thursday, October 16.

Acting on a tip-off from the national office of the SAPS, the Sebenza SAPS patrolled the area in question at about 4am.

Officers spotted four men along Lunick Road and gave chase. One suspect was arrested and the other three managed to escape.

Copper cables, clamps, isolator plates and tubulars to the estimated value of R 500 000 were recovered.

The suspects, believed to be working for a security company, allegedly colluded with fellow security officers on duty to gain access into the substation.

“They tied their fellow security officers up, who were party to the robbery. We have already contacted the security company concerned and a case of business robbery has been opened,” said the Sebenza SAPS communications officer, Constable Sharon Mahamba-Tsotsotso.

“We will also be opening a case of perjury, because the security guards on duty lied to the police about being tied up, but left out that they had a role in the robbery,” she said.

The Sebenza SAPS has launched a manhunt to arrest three suspects still at large.
