Women warned after attempted rape in Bedfordview park

When the woman screamed, the suspect ran into a part of the park with long grass and and unkempt weeds.

Bedford Gardens residents have called on the powers that be to clean up a park along Kirkby Road.

This came after a woman was nearly raped while on her way to work last Tuesday.

A resident, who did not want to be named, told the NEWS that when the woman screamed, the suspect ran into a part of the park with long grass and and unkempt weeds.

Another resident, Mr Moses Shivambu, echoed the same sentiment saying it was unsafe to have such long grass in a park, especially one that is in the middle of a suburb.

“The municipality needs to maintain the park regularly and make sure that there are security measures in place. This could even include a fence, because criminals take advantage of the fact that it is an open space. Vagrants sometimes sleep in the park from time to time,” said Mr Shivambu.

Workers travelling by train also walk through the park as it provides a shortcut.

Ms Mpho Moloto is one such person who works in the area and walks through the park on her way to and from work.

“If I leave work too late I cannot walk through the park because I fear no one would hear my cry for help in case I get attacked,” she said.

A request for comment was sent to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. No comment had been received at the time of going to press.
