Narcotics dogs sniff out 200kg crystal meth

As the team began the examinations, Angel and Bastian reacted positively for the presence of narcotics.

Narcotics dogs, Angel and Bastian who work at OR Tambo International Airport, sniffed out 200kg of crystal meth yesterday.

South African Revenue Service (SARS) customs teams, working in the cargo section at the airport, identified two consignments which had arrived from Benin for further checks.

This came as a result of increased efforts to smuggle drug shipments from Benin.

Both shipments had been declared as containing prop shafts.

As the team began the examinations, Angel and Bastian reacted positively for the presence of narcotics.

On further investigation, a sugar-like substance was found concealed inside the prop shafts.

The substance has been confirmed as crystal meth, also known as Tik, weighing a total of 200kg with a value of over R59-million.

This is the biggest ever seizure of crystal meth by SARS at OR Tambo.

The drugs were handed to the SAPS for further investigation.
