Cigarette panel-van hijacked in Sebenza

The driver was then instructed to drive to Spartan, near Kempton Park.

A panel van belonging to British American Tobacco was hijacked at Caltex, along Venda Road in Sebenza, this afternoon.

It is understood the driver was delivering a load of cigarettes when two suspicious men were wandering around the area while the driver was inside the shop.

The suspects pounced on the driver when he walked to the car.

According to the 28-year old driver, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, the suspects were not armed. They grabbed him by the hand and pushed him into the van.

He was then instructed to drive to Spartan, near Kempton Park.

On arrival, a white Ford Bantum bakkie with two other men inside approached. They off-loaded cigarette boxes estimated to the value of R50 000 from the van and fled the scene.

According to the Sebenza SAPS communications officer, Constable Sharon Mahamba-Tsotsotso, the suspects tied the driver up with cable ties and left him in the van in Spartan, along Bronze Street. The police later recovered the vehicle in Spartan.

There were still a few boxes of cigarettes left in the van when the police arrived.
