Post Office strike woes continue

Meanwhile, some striking workers set undelivered mail and a bicycle belonging to the Edenvale branch alight, last month.

Although there is no end in sight to the Post Office strike, residents are still expected to pay their municipal accounts despite not receiving their bills.

According to the spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), Mr Themba Gadebe, residents who skip payment or pay late will incur arrears on their accounts.

“We are aware of the effects of the strike by post office workers; however, it was in view of circumstances like these, among others, that the municipality introduced numerous options which only serve to make accessibility of statements and payments easy. The non-receipt of a statement does not exempt any person from the liability to pay such an account,” said Mr Gadebe.

Residents are encouraged to pay similar amounts to the previous month’s statements should they not have received their current statements.

Mr Gadebe said residents who are not receiving their statements by post, or summary statements by SMS, are encouraged to visit their customer care centres to update their contact details.

In a previous article, Edenvale resident and businessman Mr Martin Sinclair said he was frustrated when he went to the branch on September 17.

He said, “It is an utter inconvenience. It has been weeks since we received any mail. Why was this not communicated?”

At the time of going to press, it remained unclear when the strike would come to an end.
