Garbage concerns residents

During the tour, some of the areas were filled with litter and there was rubbish scattered all over some areas.

Some Kensington residents are concerned about garbage piling up in their area and complaints logged by the ward councillor that have not had any positive results so far.

Councillor Carlos Da Rocha said he has been inundated with complaints from residents about the rubbish that seems to be everywhere.

“I don’t think Pikit up takes my complaints seriously, there is always a dirty area. They seem to be cleaning where I tell them to clean. If I don’t mention it, they don’t clean it,” he added.

On Tuesday, Clr Da Rocha took the EXPRESS around the area to highlight some of the areas where he said Pikit up has not been cleaning.

During the tour, some of the areas were filled with litter and there was rubbish scattered all over some areas.

Some of the streets visited include Muller Street, Regent Street, Albertina Sisulu Road, North Avenue and 2nd Street. The area past the Observatory Girls Primary School was also visited.

One of the residents, Mr Abdull Abubakar, was seen sweeping the pavement in front of a block of flats.

He said he has been living in the block of flats for eight years and he always cleans it because if he does not, it never gets cleaned.

“Even when the cleaners come, they leave the rubbish and do not put it in plastic bags. Within minutes, the rubbish is swept up by the wind and you see it all over the street again,” he said.

Clr Da Rocha also appealed to the community to stop illegal dumping and to check the times and dates of when the trash will be collected. Trash should be put out for collection on those days.

Pikitups’s liaison officer, Ms Pansy Jali said, “We will request the depot to inspect and advise us on a plan of action. We will, however, revert to you as soon as the depot advises on the plan of action.”
