Councillor feels his ward is being singled out

The main objective of the meeting was to address issues pertaining to the delivery of basic services to the ward.

The ward 66 councillor, Clr Carlos da Rocha, sent a stern warning to the roads agency in a public meeting held on Saturday, September 20.

Clr Da Rocha said they invited the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s (JRA) managing director, Mr Silas, to observe the meeting.

The main objective of the meeting was to address issues pertaining to the delivery of basic services to the ward.

Clr Da Rocha said they have outstanding issues which have not been resolved by the JRA, some dating back as far as three years.

The issues include crushed storm water drain slabs that have not been repaired for months and storm water covers that are missing in every street corner.

Pavements that were dug up have not been restored, roads are disintegrating, and there is a large number of pot holes.

Clr Da Rocha said even when the repairs are finally done, the workmanship is below standard.

The EXPRESS is in possession of copies of emails and photographs sent by the councillor to different individuals within the JRA, outlining the issues that were not sorted out by the agency.

Clr Da Rocha said he is beginning to think that his ward is being singled out and wondered where the money that is supposed to fix these problems is going.

The meeting also addressed the issue of grass cutting. He said City Parks cuts the grass in patches and leaves it in piles on the pavements with no sign of it getting cleared.

Comment from City Parks and the JRA was unavailable at the time of going to press, as both entities said they needed time to investigate the matter.
