Old pewter hits the jackpot

A veritable treasure trove of antique English pewter will be on sale at the Thornhill Manor Retirement Village family fun day in Lakeside, Modderfontein, on Saturday, October 11.

Donated by an unknown benefactor, the pewter ware, comprising mainly tankards, has been valued by a recognised and highly respected dealer in Adelaide, Australia, who has bought two of the items for his own personal collection.

These are a ‘bucket and ridge quart pot’ and a ‘pint pot’ valued at R1 150 and R600 respectively.

There are 19 items on offer for anyone who enjoys antiques or pewter ware, with values ranging from modest to expensive.

Thornhill Manor Village committee member, Mrs Ann Raats, realised the potential value of the items as soon as she saw them.

“My immediate thought was that they were of German origin due to the heaviness of their construction. On closer inspection, I realised they are English pewter. Some of the items date back to the mid-19th century,” said Mrs Raats.

“We are really excited with this donation. The annual family fun day is our biggest fundraising event and the pewter ware will really give our funds a boost. Also, we have just bought a new bus, and Rand Aid Association who owns this village, provided us ‘magic money’ by matching our contribution to the cost of the bus, Rand-for-Rand. This will count substantially towards the bus fund,” said Mrs Esmé Erasmus, the Thornhill Manor Retirement Village manager.

Enquiries regarding the fun day can be directed to Mrs Erasmus on 011 608 2480.
