Water outlook bleak

Ekurhuleni's mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, called an Imbizo for all affected residents tonight at 6pm in the Dinwiddie Hall, corner of Eltham and Sandstone roads.

High demand for water and electricity interruptions have been blamed for a lack of water in parts of Johannesburg East and Ekurhuleni including Bedfordview this weekend.

Rand Water spokesperson, Mr Justice Mohale, said water levels improved on Sunday but power interruptions made the situation worse.

“The water demand has gone beyond what we could supply. This led to the water level dropping. On Saturday, the levels improved but due to electricity interruptions from City Power on Sunday, water levels dropped again because the pumps were not working. This might take longer to get levels back to normal. Our technicians are working on the problem to fast-track the process of normalising the situation,” said Mr Mohale.

He added that Rand Water will host a press conference today to outline what is happening.

Affected areas included Bedfordview, Primrose, Sunnyridge, Dawnview, Malvern, Bruma, Cyrildene and Kensington.

“All my social network contacts were inundated with questions from the community, asking when water will be available. These enquiries mainly came from those with young children,” said Johannesburg ward councillor, Clr Mike Spadino.

He added the area may be declared a disaster area.

Roving water trucks were dispatched to areas including Bedfordview and Primrose over the weekend.
