Imbizo report reveals challenges and achievements

The two-day mayoral Izimbizo was used to report back on the municipal performance for the 2013 to 2014 financial year, and to also provided area-specific ground breaking announcements regarding the 2014 to 2015 financial year.

While the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) faces various challenges in the Edenvale ward, it has attained several achievements.

The achievements were revealed when the executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, lead his executive committee into communities to report on the status of service delivery through the Mayoral Izimbizo programme recently.

The two-day mayoral Izimbizo was used to report back on the municipal performance for the 2013 to 2014 financial year, and to also provided area-specific ground breaking announcements regarding the 2014 to 2015 financial year.

According to the report, stormwater management in the ward was improved after a number of stormwater management projects were implemented throughout the metropolitan area.

The aim of these projects was to improve the quality of life by minimising the risk of damage to property, the risk to human life, risk of erosion and maximising the protection of the environment and optimising the water quality of the streams.

The stormwater management in the ward was also improved after the launching of the Isandovale Stormwater protection project. The aim of this project is to protect property and life by implementing erosion control.

Some of the challenges faced in the Edenvale ward include that there is no tar patching contractor allocated for the Edenvale depot, that there is no contractor for traffic signs and a lack road marking paint.

Other challenges include no contractor to unblock stormwater drains for the Edenvale ward and that there is a shortage of specialised equipment, vehicles and staff.

According to the report, the EMM made progress in the fields of sports, recreation, arts and culture after the establishment of toy libraries in the Phomolong and Edenvale wards.

The EMM did manage to appoint staff members, which will be good for effective service delivery.

The challenges facing the EMM in the fields of sports, recreation, arts and culture include a lack telephones at facilities and a slow response in addressing maintenance-related issues.

The report revealed that various libraries in the EMM are confronted with problems relating to dysfunctional lifts and air conditioning systems, broken doors that need to be replaced and other issues.

The Imbizo report also revealed that the EMM has made progress with regards to primary health care services. The achievements include the improvement in the provision of medication and vaccines by the Gauteng Department of Health for all wards.

Most drugs are available at most primary health care facilities. A new, mobile unit was procured and services are rendered five days a week.

The report revealed that successful Antiretroviral Therapy services were introduced and maintained, in spite of shortages, and that additional funds were obtained from the adjustment budget to procure N95 masks for protection against infectious diseases and tuberculosis (TB).
