Kondwani is the Spelling Master

Kensington Ridge Primary School pupil, Kondwani Kapisa, wins Joburg East Express and Hirsch's Spelling Bee Competition.

Yesterday saw the spelling masters of nine local primary schools competing for the honours at the first ever Joburg East Express and Hirsch’s Spelling Bee Competition.

The standard of competition was high, with contestants representing Sir Edmund Hillary Primary, Lyndhurst Primary, Hillcrest Primary, Eastgate Primary, Kensington Ridge Primary, Observatory Primary, Jeppe High Preparatory, Cyrildene Primary and Troyeville Primary schools.

The final knock-out round between Lerato Hlatwayo, from Sir Edmund Hillary, and Kondwani Kapisa from Kensington Ridge Primary, turned into a nail-biting competition with both girls impressing the judges with their command of the English language.

Kondwani took the spelling master title with Lerato in second place.
Patricia Ngwenya, from Observatory Primary School, took third place.

The event was hosted at Eastgate Primary School.

The Editor of the Joburg East Express, Marietta Lombard, together with Elaine Macdonald, an author, scriptwriter and children’s television presenter, were the judges. Ntsiki Mkhize was the master of ceremonies and the Ramaphosa Ambassadors Youth Forum provided entertainment.

The competition was the spearheaded by Joburg East Express branch manager, Mr Chris Mcinga, and was one of the first events to be held under the auspices of Caxton to promote literacy. The competition aimed to expand children’s horizons beyond the classroom and enhance their process of learning.
