Angel of Mons to be celebrated

The Angel of Mons is a story that assumed mythical status. 100 years later, residents of Mons Road celebrate the event.

The Sector 3 Community Police Forum (CPF), in conjunction with the Observatory Estate Residents Forum (OERF), will be celebrating the Angel of Mons on August 31 at 3pm on Mons Road.

The event will commemorate the naming of Mons Road in Observatory, 1914.

Mons Road is one of the oldest streets in the suburb. It used to be called Schmidt Street, but after the battle of Mons in Belgium, it was renamed to Mons.

The battle of Mons was one of the first battles of World War 1, when the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) defended Belgium’s neutrality and Britain, along with France, went to war against Germany.

The battle was lost by the BEF, but the heroism and courage of Mons people and soldiers inspired others across the world.

“The celebrations will be graced by residents of Mons Road within Sector 3, so they can meet their neighbours, representatives of community organisations, the CPF, senior members of the Yeoville SAPS, OERF, the MEC for Community Safety, security companies, City of Johannesburg councillors and a representative from the Belgian Embassy,” said Mr Jerome Correa, the chairman of the Sector 3 CPF.

He said the celebration is aimed at taking back the suburb and celebrating 100 years of history. Mr Correa said they will be encouraging networking to improve the neighbourhood as well as getting rid of criminal activities on Mons Road. @JoburgJourno.
