Butchered dog found

A butchered dog, found close to the Hettie Street and Christeen Avenue intersection on Sunday last week, left members of the public in shock and disgust.

Found in a black plastic bag, all that remained of the dog was its head and paws.

Ms Tanja Glavovic, from Cyrildene, said her gardener and domestic worker came to her on August 10 saying there was a dead dog in a plastic bag on the pavement. After confirming that it was a dog, she contacted the SPCA and the Cleveland SAPS.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said police officers went to the area early on Monday after receiving the complaint. She said on arrival, members found a dog’s head and parts of its skin removed.

Ms Candice Scorer, the general manager of the Sandton SPCA, said an inspector went to the address after receiving a call about the discovery.

“We retrieved the dog and did investigate. However, it is difficult to confirm at this stage what happened to the dog. No one knew who dumped the dog there, where it came from or who it belonged to. We think it was dumped there,” she said.

She said although a cable was found around the dog’s head, it could not be confirmed if it was strangled or not.

“There was not much left of the dog, except for the head and paws. We urge people who know what happened to either call the SAPS or the Sandton SPCA,” said Ms Scorer.

Ms Glavovic said, “I was absolutely appalled. I cannot believe that such savagery exists. What have the people who did this done to the rest of the dog? Who would do such a thing? What was on their minds and how could they dump the remains on the pavement? It is shocking,” she said.

She said there have been several incidents of animals being ill-treated in the area.

“While the incident with the dog last week was mind boggling, I also know there are people here who do not know how to treat their animals. There was once a female dog on heat. The owner separated this dog from another one. He kept them apart. This female dog screamed constantly. The owner had not sterilised the dog and he did not know about sterilisation. I asked the SPCA to come out. The owner eventually agreed to have the dog sterilised. The dog was taken, sterilised and returned,” said Ms Glavovic.

She said there was another incident where puppies were put in a box and left on the street.

“Who would leave them there to starve to death or get run over by motorists? I treated them and found them homes. What cruelty is this? There was also once a puppy lying face down. Someone had thrown it in a neighbour’s yard. The puppy had no bones in its legs. It was starved and left there to die. I also treated this puppy and it was fine eventually,” she said.

She said people need to be educated and action needs to be taken against those who are cruel to animals.
