Electricity safety a focus for Eskom, EMM

Throughout National Electricity Safety Week, Eskom and EMM stakeholders embarked on various campaigns aimed at highlighting the dangers of the unsafe use of electricity.

Eskom partnered with stakeholders from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) when the National Electricity Safety Week took place from August 11 to August 17.

Throughout National Electricity Safety Week, Eskom and EMM stakeholders embarked on various campaigns aimed at highlighting the dangers of the unsafe use of electricity.

The various dangers included cable theft, illegal connections and vandalism of Eskom’s networks, which often results in serious injuries and even death.

“Safety around electricity is something that everyone should consider, especially now as we celebrate National Electricity Safety Week,” said Ms Ntombifuthi Hlophe, the Eskom Ekurhuleni zone communications practitioner.

“Safety is something that should also be taught to children, who should be warned not to play near electrical installations or touch wires lying on the ground,” said Ms Hlophe.

Communities in the Ekurhuleni area that were visited during National Electricity Safety Week to create awareness included Vosloorus, Katlehong, Tsakane, Duduza, Daveyton, Watville and Etwatwa.

“It is essential that electricity is treated with respect. Making sure that you and your family are aware of its dangers will ensure that it remains a friend that can add value to your life,” said Ms Hlophe.
