The demolition of the shops along Queen Street, in Modderfontein, has begun.
The destruction of the old shopping complex will make way for the first phase of the long-planned new centre.
It is unknown when phase two of the centre will kick off.
Shops currently affected include the filling station, veterinary practise, beauty salon and the post office.
It is expected that construction of the new filling station will start by September 1.
The filling station is expected to re-open around mid-December.
