EMPD arrest four at Gillooly’s Interchange

Three men in a Toyota Avanza, escorting the stolen vehicle, were also arrested after a high speed chase which ended near the Van Buuren Road off-ramp.

Members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s (EMPD) K9 Unit arrested four men after they were caught with a stolen vehicle.

The arrests were made on Tuesday after officers received information that a tracking device installed in a stolen Toyota Corolla sedan responded on the N3 at Gillooly’s Interchange.

Officers stopped the stolen vehicle at the interchange and arrested the man driving it.

Three men in a Toyota Avanza, escorting the stolen vehicle, were also arrested after a high speed chase which ended near the Van Buuren Road off-ramp.

“On sighting the stolen Toyota, members of the K9 Unit closed in on it. When the driver realised he could not escape, he gestured to the officers that the gold Toyota Avanza with three occupants following him were his accomplices,” said the EMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

“The occupants of the Avanza tried to speed away but stood no chance against the EMPD officer and were apprehended just after the Van Buuren Road off-ramp,” said Supt Kgasago.

Further investigations revealed that one of the men in the escorting vehicle was arrested in June this year for stealing a Toyota Corolla in Edenvale.

Implements used in vehicle thefts were found in the possession of the four men.

In addition, the escorting vehicle was also improperly registered and was confiscated to enable further investigations.

The four suspects were taken to the Bedfordview Police Station and are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
