Krejcir lawyer accuses witness of cover up

Luphondo claimed to have been kicked and assaulted by police officers who arrested him at his home

Radovan Krejcir and Desai Luphondo’s lawyer has accused a state witness of covering up for a senior police officer.

Annelene van den Heever, the pair’s lawyer, has said Sergeant Vusimuzi Mogane covered up the fact that Captain Freddy Ramuhala was present at the police station when a confession statement was taken from Luphondo.

Capt Ramuhala was the investigating officer in the case.

Sgt Mogane disputed this claim, saying he did not know who Capt Ramuhala was, or what he even looked like.

Van den Heever however, maintains family and friends of Capt Ramahula could attest to his being at the police station.

Sgt Mogane again stated that he could not comment on this.

Following the exchange, the prosecutor and defence finished their questions and he was released from the witness box.

Capt Ramuhala was then called to testify.

What is rapidly being dubbed a trial-within-a-trial began when Van der Heever objected to Luphondo’s statement being entered into evidence.

Van der Heever claims her client was coerced into making a confession. Luphondo claimed to have been kicked and assaulted by police officers who arrested him at his home on November 22, 2013.

Krejcir, Luphondo and several others are currently on trial, facing charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and dealing in drugs.

The trial continues.
