Elphin Lodge resident celebrates 90th birthday

The Family travelled from England and Australia to join the birthday celebrations, which started with a three-night stay at a game lodge.

Mr Ken Gannaway recently celebrated his 90th birthday with his family and friends at the Rand Aid-run retirement village, Elphin Lodge.

Mr Gannaway and his wife Rene moved to the retirement village six years ago after having lived at Parkmore for 50 years.

The Family travelled from England and Australia to join the birthday celebrations, which started with a three-night stay at a game lodge.

A gathering for 30 family members and friends was also held at the Elphin Lodge clubhouse.

Mr Gannaway’s sons dressed him in a Superman outfit and he played the part with gusto.

The Continuity Hiking Club arranged another celebration to honour both Mr and Mrs Gannaway, the oldest active couple in the club.

“Being members of the hiking club has kept us active for almost 30 years and we have hiked in some memorable places, including mainland Greece and its largest island, Crete,” said the couple.

The couple also cycled on the island of Aegina and completed a five-day canoeing trip down the Orange River.

Mr Gannaway has practised yoga for almost 25 years and still attends classes.

Mr Gannaway has lived in South Africa for over 60 years. The couple has two sons, one daughter and six grandchildren.

“I am deeply grateful for having enjoyed such a rich life and for being blessed with good health and the support of a happy, loving family. I have also been blessed with the ability to look back over the past and to look forward to the future, no matter how long or short that may be, with a glow of satisfaction,” he said.
