Bogus official nabbed

According to Const Malatji, the victim told the suspect he was doing voluntary sessions with a shelter and was not practising.

A man was arrested for posing as an official from the Department of Health.

The arrest took place at the corner of Dunbar and Bezuidenhout streets on Wednesday, July 30.

“It is alleged that the suspect went to the victim’s house and posed as an official from the Department of Health. He accused the victim of not being registered as a physiotherapist and demanded a bribe of R10 000,” said Constable Thabo Malatji, of the Yeoville SAPS.

According to Const Malatji, the victim told the suspect he was doing voluntary sessions with a shelter and was not practising.

“The suspect forcefully took R2 000 from the victim and instructed him to get the rest of the money. The victim reported the matter to the police and a trap was set,” said Const Malatji.

The suspect was arrested when he returned to pick up the rest of the money. It was later established he was not employed by the Department of Health.

“A 9mm pistol was found in the suspect’s possession and he is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of extortion and robbery,” said Const Malatji. @JoburgJourno
