The Yeoville SAPS’s social crime prevention and Youth Desk reached out to the community in celebrating Mandela Day on Friday, July 18.
Constable Lindiwe Pile, the co-ordinator of the social crime desk, said the day’s events were in the true spirit of Mandela.
“The day was about giving back to the community. We were joined by members of the Methodist Church and residents in our attempt to clean up the streets which are full of crime and grime,” said Constable Pile.
Members of the Youth Desk also took part in the day’s events.
“Members of the church prepared meals for the homeless in the area. They also handed out blankets to those who have no shelter,” said Const Pile.
She encouraged people to try and go beyond the 67 minutes in their daily lives.
Constable Thabo Malatji, the spokesperson for the Yeoville SAPS, said every day should be Mandela Day.
“We are reaching out to the community and we urge the residents to meet us halfway. They must join us in trying to remove both crime and dirt from our streets,” said Const Malatji. @JoburgJourno
