Dominican Convent celebrates Mandela Day

In the spirit of giving, Dominican Convent School extended Mandela Day to a Mandela week to maximise their reach.

Children from the toddler groups to matriculants at Dominican Convent used the week to bring items such as non-perishable food, clothing and blankets to school. These items were then placed in large bins and subsequently distributed to needy communities close to school, with lollipop friendship cards made by grade two pupils.

Pre-school pupils, whose faces were painted in the colours of the South African flag, sang the national anthem and participated in the primary school ceremony of swapping plants with St James’ Preparatory School.

The grade eight and nine pupils spent their 67 minutes cleaning up areas immediately outside the school.

“As our school is in a challenging environment, this initiative greatly assisted the general appearance of the school from the outside,” said Ms Renata Haywood, the director of marketing at the school.

Some grade 10 pupils manned a soup table while the others walked around in the community to gather hungry people, so that they could receive a hearty cup of soup and bread.

The grade 11 pupils, armed with black bags, went to Rhodes Park to conduct a clean-up while the grade 12 pupils did the same at Murray Park.
