The Edenvale Community Police Forum held a crime prevention meeting on Saturday, July 5, at Eastleigh Ridge.

The forum met to discuss crime and to know what measures to take to avoid being a victim of crime.

The chairman of the Eastleigh Ridge Road Closure, Ms Sheryl Damerell, said residents should pay attention to the basics like keeping their doors locked and ensuring that windows and doors are secured and locked.

“If you hear a strange sound, do not go outside to investigate. Switch the lights on and call for help, or press the panic button.” she said.

The chairman of the Edenvale Community Police Forum, Ms Linda Mckenzie, told residents that crime has increased in the Eastleigh Ridge area.

“We need to stand together as a community and assist by reporting suspicious activity. Never drive straight to your property; try and drive through the area first.”

The acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Coloel Robbie Roberts said if people hear a noise in their property, they should not go out and investigate it themselves. He said residents should call their sector police number which is 071 675 6842/3 or their security company.

“Do not put your life in danger, call us and put your sector and security number on speed dial,” he said.

He warned residents that criminals do their homework. They watch and learn people’s habits and weaknesses, and then they make a move.

The next meeting, in which crime will be tackled, will be held in Illiondale on Saturday, July 19, at the Margaret Road park at 10am.
