Residents frustrated over ‘relaxed workers’

Clr Mike Spadino, of ward 118, will attend to problems relating to city workers allegedly not doing their jobs.

Bruma residents recently complained about workers opting to layabout instead of cleaning, while Kensington residents complained about Pikitup cleaners doing the same.

Bruma residents raised concerns about what they believed was Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) workers who were at the lake area, allegedly doing nothing throughout the day.

Ms Valda Gossmann, from the Bruma Residents’ Association, said the problem has been on-going for months.

“They are doing sweet nothing and achieving absolutely nothing. In the meantime, the parks are in a dreadful state, the pavements are overgrown and if they do cut anything, they leave the mountains of grass cuttings all around. It is hideous,” she said.

Another resident, who did not want her name published, complained about Pikitup workers who allegedly lie around doing nothing at the corner of Galteemore and Queen streets in Kensington.

“They sit around every day doing no work. They lie in the sun, talk and have their lunch instead of working. Why do they not clean like they are supposed to? There are people who are desperate and in need of jobs yet these people do nothing and get paid. It is frustrating to see them relax throughout the day and not do any work,” said the woman.

Ms Jenny Moodley, from the JCPZ, said the workers thought to be from the entity are not. Instead, they are Environment, Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) workers.

The EXPRESS forwarded an enquiry to the city regarding these workers on June 10. No comment had been received at the time of going to print.

The EXPRESS also forwarded an enquiry to Ms Pansy Oyedele, from Pikitup, on July 8 and 14. At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.

Clr Spadino said he will investigate and communicate with the relevant departments about the problems relating to the workers not doing their jobs.

He said there are a lack of inspections and no supervision of work done by Pikitup management.

“I will endeavour to see that Pikitup delivers on its mandate by monitoring workers and reporting it if no work is been done,” said Clr Spadino.
