Criminals target shoppers and motorists for valuables

Criminals lurk around various intersections, shopping centre parking lots and at restaurants. Do not be an easy target for them

Theft from motor vehicles in Edenvale has increased at an alarming rate.

At shopping centres, vehicles are targeted where valuables are left lying on the front or back seats.

At off ramps, motorists are targeted in smash-and-grab incidents.

“We urge everyone to not leave valuables in their vehicle at any time and to be alert when approaching intersections,” said the acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts.

“Criminals lurk around various intersections, shopping centre parking lots and at restaurants. Do not be an easy target for them,” he said.

Lt Col Roberts added that while many cases reported to the SAPS were legitimate, there was also an increase in the number of fraudulent cases reported.

“We are working closely with officials from various insurance companies. Anyone caught lying to the SAPS will be charged with perjury,” said Lt Col Roberts said.

Tips:

Make sure your vehicle is properly locked when parking at shopping centres.

Do not leave valuable items such as phones, laptops and documentation in your vehicle while shopping.

Do not leave electronics and handbags in vehicles while travelling. Rather put these in the car’s boot.
